Legend has it that rugby was born in 1823 when William Webb Ellis “with fine disregard for the rules of football as played in his time at Rugby school, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive feature of the Rugby game”.  With legends being what they are, we do know that the game of rugby has its origins at the Rugby school in England.  However, the rules of the game were not codified until 1871, and since the men who came up with the rules were lawyers they rules became known as Rugby laws.
